The Patient¢¥s Responses Toward the Nursing Services and Practice


Abstract
To evaluate the patient¢¥s attitude toward practice and services as rendered by, the nurses in the employ of University Hospital in Seoul City, an enquiring has been planned and distributed to 56 nurses(26 day shift, 17 evening 13 night shift) for them to record every Monday during the month of August 1974 and also every Wednesday during the month of November, 1974 totaling 6 times.
Total number of 336 replies were completed and returned by the nurses revealing their activities of the present status.
At this same time another set of enquiring has been answered by the adult
patients staying at the hospital. Total number of 229 replies were returned by the
patients, 100 copies of reply in August and 129 in November 1974.
A study has been thus made for the purpose of analyzing and evaluating the
replies, from both groups in regard to the nursing practice and nursing services. The followings are the results as summarized therefrom;¡þ1) Of the total number of respondents (patients);
61.14(140)% were male and 38.86 (89)%0/ were female.
28.38%-in their twenties.
32. 14%-male college graduates and 33.71%-female high school graduates. 23.57¡Æ%-commerce in male and 46.17%-housewives in occupation. 2) Of the total number of respondents;¡þ
31.88%-said over two months and "24.89% said under one week in hospitalization.
60.70%-were no experience of prior hospitalization. 48.31% were hospitalized by trauma or injuries. , 3) Of the 8-hour working time in day shift,

13.22%, giving and taking report,
1.12%, teaching the patient and his family,
0.92%, instructing the nursing students.
In evening shift,
25.17%, actual patient care,
12.19%, giving and taking report,
No consideration and allocation of time rendered for teaching the patient ands his family and, instructing the nursing students.
In the night shift,
16.39% for making rounds,
17.67% for nurse¢¥s recording,
15.13% for actual patient care.
4) Of the actual nursing activities in the three different shifts, 24. 38%., for A.M. care in day shift,
36.74% for special nursing care according to the nature of each ward in ¡þevening shift,
44.19% for special nursing care in night shift.
5) The number of nurses was not sufficient throughout the 3 shifts enough as; indicated by the medical law (patient nurse is 5 2 in medical law), 4.19 : 1 was the patient-nurse ratio,
11.5 : 1 was patient-nurse ratio in day shift at internal medicine ward, 15.. 7 : I was patient-nurse ratio in evening shift at surgical ward, 23.5 : 1 was patient-nurse ratio in night shift at the surgical ward, 46 1 was patient-nurse ratio in night shift at. internal medicine ward.
6) 661.14% of ` the total patients, the nurses being kind while 37.55%, the nurses
being unkind.
7) 63. 31% of the total patients said inadequate explanation was made by the nurses before giving, any nursing activity.
55. 90% of the total" patients said inadequate explanation was made by the nurses. before implementing the clinical studies.
8) 52.4016 of the total patients, respond that the nurses application of the clinical knowledge was satisfactory.
9) In regard to the impression of the nurses,
55..46% of the total respondents considered them reliable, 76.42% of the total patients considered them thankful.
